The purpose of this is to set out our positions on key issues related to FH and Lp(a) and its impact on patients and families.  These positions govern the decisions and actions of the FH Australia in the course of their duties.

FH diagnosis

FHA supports all early screening and testing for FH (newborn screening, child and adolescent population screening and cascade testing), as well as adult population-based genetic testing. Care pathways should be available to ensure that diagnosed patients are appropriately managed through primary, tertiary or a shared care model.

FH treatment

FHA supports widening the eligibility criteria for new treatment options so that more FH patients can access life-saving therapies. FHA advocates for all lipid lowering therapies to be accessible, available and affordable for FH patients for both primary and secondary prevention of premature cardiovascular disease.

Lipoprotein(a)

FHA supports the measurement of lipoprotein(a) in patients with FH, as lipoprotein(a) confers a higher risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with FH. FHA supports the application for a new MBS item for the measurement of lipoprotein(a) in FH and patients with early atherosclerosis.

National strategy

FHA supports the development of a coordinated national strategy for FH that integrates national advocacy collaborations with public health promotion. This includes the implementation of targeted education programs to increase FH awareness among the general public and healthcare professionals.
